POPULATION CONTROL
It is interesting to note how grown-ups behave like juveniles when confronted with a very passionate issue. Thankfully, I myself do not have any obligations to state my views regarding the very contentious issue of population control. The debate here is strikingly similar passion-wise to pro vs. con on abortion in the USA.
The other day, ABS/CBN reported that the United Nations warns Philippine population will double in 25 years. Is this good? Or, is this bad? Following the thinking of the church - good. It banks on the argument that "children are the future of the country", therefore suppressing production of children suppresses the future. The pro control people has always put forward the dogma that overpopulation is the primary cause of poverty.
Listening to the two sides argue, I find them downright comical in the way they twist the facts of conception and contraception:

- The anti popcon states that the birth control pill is abortifacient (works like an abortion, so therefore murdering a human being, truly a straight ride to eternal damnation). FACT: The traditional pills prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation in the female, so there is never a fertilized egg (embryo) in the first place. No embryo - no abortion.
- The pro popcon states that the IUD blocks the sperm, therefore preventing fertilization of the egg. No embryo - no abortion. FACT: IUD's are synthetic materials of various shapes and form designed to incite periodic contraction of the uterus in it's natural attempt to get rid of the foreign material. It prevents childbirth by preventing implantation of the fertilized egg (embryo) in the uterus. A quick lesson for the unknowing: The egg from the female ovary is released once a month and is picked up by the fimbriae/fallopian tube (the ones that look like horns in the drawing). If sexual intercourse had occurred, the sperm cells are carried into the uterus and on into the fallopian tubes where the millions of sperms fight over one egg. One sperm wins and fertilizes the egg transforming it into an embryo, the very start of a human being. The embryo then travels downwards to the main cavity of the uterus over a period of 1 week where it implants and continues on to develop over 9 months. IUD's prevent this implantation process.
Other primers in human reproduction (so you do not get fooled by the pro and con arguments):
- There are birth control pills available in the USA (I don't think these are available here) which are true abortion pills. It incites the uterus to expel the recently implanted embryo.
- Condoms and diaphragms block the sperms from ever meeting the egg. So, no embryo ever forms.
- Spermecides (gel's and foams) as the name implies kill the sperms on contact. So, no embryo ever forms.
- Rhythm method relies on he and she knowing when the female egg comes out, and so therefore he does not deposit his sperms. So, no embryo ever forms.
